About the Show
Narrated by Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old boy with autism who lives in Swindon, England, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” begins when Christopher discovers that his neighbor’s dog, Wellington, has been killed with a garden fork. Determined to solve the mystery, he decides to investigate the crime, inspired by his love of logic and detective stories. As Christopher interviews neighbors and gathers clues, he uncovers secrets that go far beyond the dog’s death — secrets that send him on a journey alone to London.
Cast/Roles
Christopher Boone (Male/Female who can present as male age 15 – 20 to play 15). Christopher is an English teenager who is an outsider due to his perception of the world. He notices things in fine detail yet has difficulty understanding social and emotional cues. He is probably on the autism spectrum and has behaviors that are typically associated with Asperger’s Syndrome, though he is intelligent and sensitive. Must be okay with physical movements including being hugged, touched on shoulders and lifted into the air (the Ensemble will lift the actor in the air as part of the narrative, etc).
Siobhan (Female, 30-40). Christopher’s teacher and mentor, the only person in Christopher’s life with an understanding of his situation. She strives to teach him how society works and how to behave within its guidelines. While negotiating around Christopher’s anger, she is professional, warm, caring and calm. She is also sensitive to his strained relationship with his father. She often serves as the narrator of Christopher’s story; English, Irish, Welsh, or Scottish accent.
Ed Boone (Male, 35-50). Christopher’s father; estranged from his wife (Judy) and struggling as a single parent trying to raise his son the best he can. A working class man, Ed is proud, gruff, and unable to convey his emotions, yet he loves his son deeply. Working class English accent. He has trouble communicating with Christopher, who often frustrates him. A plumber and heating engineer by trade, Ed is usually practical and patient in dealing with Christopher but a difficult situation can make him lose it, sometimes violently.
Judy Boone (Female, 35-45). Christopher’s mother; she works as a secretary and is estranged from her husband. A working class woman with a tough exterior, she has no support system to raise her son and blames herself for her inability to cope with Christopher. She has had to fight for things in life and is feisty yet loving but impatient. Judy has felt alone in her situation which frustrates her to the point of desperation. English accent appropriate to the working middle class.
