About the Show

Set in an English country house, the play showcases the eccentric Bliss family and their interactions with guests whom they have invited to their home over a chaotic weekend. There are roles for 9 male and female actors ranging in ages from 20’s to 60’s. Auditioning actors will read scenes from the script.

Cast/Roles

Christopher Boone (Male/Female who can present as male age 15 – 20 to play 15). Christopher is an English teenager who is an outsider due to his  perception of the world. He notices things in fine detail yet has difficulty understanding social and emotional cues. He is probably on the autism spectrum and has behaviors that are typically associated with Asperger’s Syndrome, though he is intelligent and sensitive. Must be okay with physical movements including being hugged, touched on shoulders and lifted into the air (the Ensemble will lift the actor in the air as part of the narrative, etc).

Siobhan (Female, 30-40). Christopher’s teacher and mentor, the only person in Christopher’s life with an understanding of his situation. She strives to teach him how society works and how to behave within its guidelines. While negotiating around Christopher’s anger, she is professional, warm, caring and calm. She is also sensitive to his strained relationship with his father.

THE BLISS FAMILY

Judith Bliss – 40’s/50’s, A recently retired, legendary stage actress. She is vain, dramatic, and over-the-top, constantly treating her life and family as a private stage play.

David Bliss – 40’s/50’s, Judith’s husband, a self-absorbed novelist. He is usually locked away trying to finish his latest book and is oblivious to the chaos around him.

Sorel Bliss – 20’s, Their young daughter. Clever and social, she longs for normalcy but is highly argumentative and frequently falls into her family’s manipulative theatrical displays.

Simon Bliss – 20’s, Sorel’s brother, a listless, self-centered artist. He is very close with his sister, perpetually competing for his mother’s attention, and frequently uses his charm to mess with the guests.

THEIR GUESTS (VICTIMS)

Myra Arundel – 20’s/30’s, A fashion-forward, confident socialite. She accepts Simon’s invitation hoping to meet David, coolly rejecting the son’s advances while flirting with the father.

Richard Greatham – 30’s – 50’s, A proper, straight-laced English diplomat invited by Sorel. He is initially attracted to Sorel but ends up baffled by the family’s bizarre behavior.

Jackie Coryton – 20’s, A shy, anxious “flapper” invited by David. She is easily overwhelmed and constantly in over her head when dealing with the bizarre Bliss household.

Sandy Tyrell – 20’s A jovial, athletic young man invited by Judith. He is a devoted fan of her acting but quickly becomes a confused pawn in the family’s games.

THE MAID

Clara – 60’s, overworked, often chaotic housekeeper. She is fiercely outspoken and has a loud presence in the household.
