First performed in Paris in 1942, the play reflects the main character’s rejection of authority to parallel the French Resistance of the Nazi occupation at the time.
The story follows Antigone’s defiance of an edict by the authoritarian King Creon that forbids her to provide her brother with a proper burial.
Her conviction to do the right thing in the face of tyranny humanizes the character and makes her sacrifice all the more tragic as it questions civil rights, ethics, and the need for activism.
Antigone: Female, plays 20s, Lead; highly dramatic and demanding role. A born rebel. Shakespearean in feel.
Creon: Male 50s-60s; Lead. Dramatic, demanding role. Shakespearean in tone. A businessman, tyrant.
Chorus: Gender neutral. Supporting role. Guides the audience and actors through the play. Commanding lecturer. The speaking voice is everything—several long speeches. Think of a cross between a Greek chorus and the Stage Manager in Our Town.
Guard #1 (Jonas): Male plays 30s-50s; Supporting role. The main comic relief in the play. Does not know when to shut up. Doesn’t quite see the tragedy.
Ismene: Female, plays 20s. Supporting dramatic role. Antigone’s practical sister. Tries to reason with Antigone.
Nurse: Female, 50’s 60’s, supporting role, Antigone’s nanny. Maternal. Comic. Whiny and loving.
Haemon: Male, plays 20’s, supporting role. Antigone’s fiancé and Creon’s son. Sweet and dramatic.
Guard #2: Gender neutral, 20s-50’s. Small. Must be both comic and seriously threatening.
Guard #3: Gender neutral, 20s-50’s. Small. Must be both comic and seriously threatening.
Messenger: Gender neutral. Tiny role. One great monologue reporting the deaths of Antigone and Haemon. Will double with Guard #2 or #3.
Eurydice: Presents female, 40’s-60’s. Non-speaking. This is an oddly vital one-scene role who represents the tragedy in her silence. Will double with Guard #2 or #3 or the Nanny.
Auditions may be cold readings of sides (excerpts) from the show or can be previewed/downloaded below.
