Circular Thinking: Original Art Quilts Exhibit
What does a circle mean to you? A clock face, a life cycle, the arc of the sun, the ring of a ripple on water? This month, the Milford Arts Council invites you to explore these questions and many more through Circular Thinking — a stunning new exhibition of 36 original art quilts created by 21 exceptional textile artists.
Far from the quilts of tradition, these fiber art works are bold, imaginative, and visually arresting. Each piece takes the circle — ancient symbol, universal shape, enduring metaphor — as its starting point, and from there the artists diverge into a remarkable range of interpretations.
The 21 artists are all members of the Connecticut chapter of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), the internationally recognized organization dedicated to promoting art quilts as a serious fine art form.
Fourteen of the artists are Connecticut-based, including Milford’s own Lin Elmo, whose two pieces — Watch Your Face…In the Face of the Watch and Stitches in Contrast — are among the works on display. The full group of artists spans Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Colorado, bringing a wonderfully diverse range of perspectives and techniques to the gallery walls.
Exhibit Juror. Every work in the show was hand-selected by juror Betty Busby, an internationally acclaimed fiber artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Busby brings a rare depth of artistic vision to her role: a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in ceramics, she went on to found and run a ceramic tile manufacturing studio in Los Angeles for 18 years before turning her focus fully to fiber art and teaching in 2003. Her work is known worldwide, and her eye for quality and originality is evident in every piece chosen for this show.
